A full concert experience with the inimitable acoustics of Boston's Jordan Hall, this video hails from our 1st performance in a series of concerts entitled, "The Poet" which was featured during A Far Cry's last concert cycle of the 2009-2010 season. The idea was to concoct a program of music that had been written during, and pieces lamenting the devastation of the Second World War, with a set of Jazz standards from the period as the center piece & sandwiched with 2 of Paul Sacher commissioned masterpieces of the era: opening with Arthur Honegger's 2nd Symphony for Strings and Trumpet & concluding the program with Richard Strauss's Metamorphosen for 23 solo strings. One of Strauss's final odes in the annals of western music, the piece is still fully surrounded by questions. As the origins of its themes have been enigmatic in its "what prompted him to write it?" history, along with the inscription at the end of piece stating "In Memoriam" have been vehemently controversial (decades long debate over whether it was intended as Beethoven's Eroica Symphony's quote to his involvement with the Nazis during the war even starting from its premiere), but without a doubt, the piece pays homage to those who've perished & is a journey from within. Recorded live for A Far Cry by Simon C. Yue on April 2nd, 2010.
